ARTISTS
Emo de Medeiros (1979), a French-Beninese artist, lives and works in Cotonou and Paris. He studied at the École normale supérieure (Paris/Ulm), the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Paris) and the Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt).
His work has been exhibited internationally in France (Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo), Germany (MARKK Hamburg), Brazil (Videobrasil Contemporary Art Festival São Paulo), Nigeria (LagosPhoto), the United Kingdom, Japan, China, and in the biennials of Marrakech, Dakar and Casablanca.
His work is built around a unique concept he calls contexture, a fusion of the digital and the material, the tangible and the intangible, exploring the hybridizations, interconnections and circulations of forms, technologies, traditions, myths and commodities.
He also draws on new perspectives and conversations taking place in a new space: the current context of the postcolonial, globalized and digitized world of the early 21st century.
Her research focuses on transcultural spaces and the questioning of traditional notions of origin, place or identity and their mutations through non-linear narratives.
Emo de Medeiros' works always have a salient conceptual dimension and are characterized by a participatory and rhythmic approach merging traditional, technological and semiological elements in transmedia forms.
Emo de Medeiros uses a wide range of media in his practice, including drawing, sculpture, text, video, photography, assemblage, performance, electronic music, installations, painting and applied fabric.
