ARTISTS
Sue Williamson (b. 1941, Lichfield, UK, lives in Cape Town) emigrated with her family to South Africa in 1948. Trained in printmaking,Williamson works in installation, photography and video. She is part of the pioneering generation of South African artists who began working in the 1970s on the social change of apartheid South Africa and by the 1980’s she became internationally recognized for her series of portraits of women involved in the country’s political struggle.
Williamson is represented in many other public collections including theTate Modern, theVictoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in NewYork and recently the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Centre Pompidou.
In the past few years, her work has been seen in Paris on exhibitions at the Maison Rouge,the Fondation LouisVuitton,La Monnaie de Paris,and the MacVal Musee d’Art Contemporain.
